Big Boned, Boldly Built, Beautiful Body

Let’s dig into body recomposition.

Yes, you can be big boned. A spectrum of bone sizes and bone densities defines our population.

Bone size is one part of your body composition.

Our bodies are made up of 4 big groups of tissue- muscle, bone, fatty tissue and fluid/water.

All these tissues serve different and important functions in our health and wellness.

Now fatty tissue on our bodies gets a lot of bad press. And yes, excess fatty tissue, particularly that that can accumulate around important organs can lead to inflammation and higher risk for many health complications.

But some of the fatty tissue that we have is essential. It is crucial in our nervous system, how our brain functions, our bone marrow and for energy storage

There are several ways that you can measure your body composition. A number of them require specialized equipment or testing that is ordered by your physician.

Yet, there is one readily accessible indicator of how your body distributes some fatty tissue and that is your waist circumference. All you need is a tape measure to record it.

When waist circumference is above certain levels- 35 inches for women, 40 inches for men- generally this may mean a higher risk of metabolic disease.

So as you are framing and reframing your weight loss goals, tracking your body recomposition can be a key metric for many reason often because when we want to lose weight what we want to lose is fat.

With losing weight, we do lose fatty tissue, but also muscle and water.

Body recomposition means having a targeted approach to focus on fat loss and maintaining or even increasing muscle mass since muscle is a crucial organ of longevity and wellness.
